Understanding Classical Hatha Yoga

Before you begin, know what Classical Hatha Yoga is, how it is structured, and how to take your first step.

What Is Yoga?

Yoga is a mechanism and a technology to get you to that state of experience where you see reality just the way it is. It is a technology for bringing the individual into a conscious, harmonious relationship with the rest of existence — the word itself means "union." Yoga is not an expression; it is a technology through which you can change the shape of who you are, allowing you to consciously evolve rather than function on autopilot.

What Is Classical Hatha Yoga?

Classical Hatha Yoga is a phenomenally powerful science that has been transmitted in the same way for thousands of years, coming from an ancient lineage that has preserved these teachings without any distortion. "Hatha" comes from "Ha" (sun) and "Tha" (moon) — the two fundamental, opposing energies within the human system. Hatha Yoga is the science of bringing the system into balance.

Why Classical Hatha Yoga?

Classical Hatha Yoga is for inner transformation — it brings balance, clarity and stability to your body, mind, emotions and energy. Because of that, its effects tend to be calming for stress and anxiety, supportive of physical health, and boosting for your energy.

Our Training

Each CHYTA teacher completes intensive residential training at the Isha Hatha School of Yoga, founded by Sadhguru. In the school, Yoga is transmitted as a living process, where teachers come to understand — through their own experience — the importance of integrity, responsibility and precision.

How We Teach / Transmit

Classical Hatha Yoga is a science, not a style. It is taught through a systematic and deeply experiential process that combines physical postures, breath, and inner focus to bring alignment and balance to the entire system.

Why In-Person Workshops

It is not just about doing the postures — much more subtle transmission is happening in live, in-person sessions. These sessions provide a deep, life-changing experience where participants imbibe the fullness of what Yoga can offer, learning each practice step-by-step until they can do it on their own — building a foundation of balance and clarity that continues to grow.

Support After the Program

Before the program ends, all the questions participants have are resolved. After the program, we continue to support participants on their journey of wellbeing and mastering the system. Because precision matters with anything this powerful, we offer correction sessions to help participants retain the integrity and precision of their practice.

New? Start Here

Many people who aren't sure if they want to start with Yoga begin with a free online session that offers some simple, yet powerful, practice. Others start with one of the core programs — commonly Upa Yoga, Angamardana or Surya Kriya — as these require no prior experience with yoga. From there, a CHYTA teacher can help you choose the next process based on your goals, health and lifestyle. Use the Program Finder to locate a certified teacher near you and begin the conversation.

Which Process to Choose

The right process depends on your body, your goals and where you are in life. Some programs work more on your physical and energy levels (Angamardana, Surya Shakti), some bring balance and organize your energies to function at their best (Surya Kriya, Yogasana), and others focus on the breath or mind (Nadi Shuddhi, Bhastrika Kriya). A CHYTA teacher can help you choose — see the full Programs overview to explore what each process offers.

Are There Prerequisites?

Most core programs have no prerequisites and are open to anyone in reasonable health. A small number of processes — for example Bhastrika Kriya — do require that you already practice one of the core programs regularly. Any prerequisite is noted on that program's page. As CHYTA puts it: you don't need experience, flexibility, or perfect health to begin — the practices meet you where you are.

Don't Be Afraid of the Lingo

Words like "kriya," "asana," and "mudra" can sound unfamiliar at first, but each simply names a category of process: a kriya is an inner energy process, an asana is a posture, and a mudra is a gesture that channels energy. You don't need to know the terminology to benefit — a CHYTA teacher will guide you through it in plain language.

How Programs Are Structured

Programs are offered as modules: you attend once, learn the complete process under a certified teacher, and then practice it on your own going forward. This is different from an ongoing class — the goal is for every participant to leave fully equipped to practice independently.

CHYTA

The Classical Hatha Yoga Teachers Association (CHYTA) is a non-profit community of independent teachers across Europe who offer yogic practices structured by Sadhguru — yoga in its pure form, as practiced for many millennia, taught by people who have personally experienced its transformation.

Sadhguru

Sadhguru

The classical Hatha Yoga taught by CHYTA teachers has been structured and transmitted by Sadhguru, a yogi, mystic and a visionary who has dedicated his life to making this ancient science available in modern times.

“Hatha Yoga is not body-bending business. It is about taking charge of the way you think, feel, and perceive life.” — Sadhguru

Why lineage matters? A genuine lineage provides safety, authenticity and the deepest level of understanding of how our human system works, ensuring these practices remain time-tested and unmodified so that each individual can reach their full potential.
